Why did Bejing get the Olympics?

In a couple of years the international community will come to Bejing to “[bring] people together in peace to respect universal moral principles.”

That’s right, Bejing, where an oppressive government exists that still kills its people during protests, will host the 2008 Olympics.

I guess we can hope that shining the light of peace on Bejing will bring about change. But it seems to me that we should ask for peace before giving them the economic/cultural gift of the olympics.

What do you think?

The only chatter I hear about this is that it’s “expected to be a business-networking landfall” or other money-obsessed comments of the sort. I don’t think it’s en vogue to talk about social issues anymore. Too sad. Thanks for your post on this.
